How a Portuguese or Brazilian Business in Dublin Can Show Up on Google Maps
Dublin has a large and growing Portuguese-speaking community, and with it, more and more Portuguese and Brazilian businesses: cafés and bakeries, restaurants, beauty and nail studios, barbers, cleaning companies, construction and renovation, language schools and accountants. Many of them start with customers from their own community, through WhatsApp groups and word of mouth. To grow, the next step is reaching Irish customers too, and for local businesses that usually means one thing: showing up on Google Maps.
Here is a practical, step-by-step guide. Most of it is free.
Why Google Maps Matters So Much
When someone in Dublin searches "nail salon near me", "Brazilian restaurant Dublin" or "bathroom renovation Dublin 15", Google shows a map with three businesses before the normal results. Those three get most of the calls, clicks and visits. They're chosen mainly by three things: how relevant the business is to the search, how close it is, and how trusted and active its profile looks. You can't change your distance, but you can control the other two.
1. Create Your Google Business Profile Correctly
- Use your real business name, exactly as on your sign or website. Don't add keywords like "best Brazilian café Dublin" to the name; it can get your profile suspended.
- Choose the most specific category, for example "Brazilian restaurant", "Bakery" or "Nail salon". You can add secondary categories too.
- Add your address, or a service area if you go to your customers (cleaning, construction, mobile beauty).
- Add an Irish phone number and your opening hours, including bank holidays.
- Verify the profile. Google will ask you to confirm the business, usually by video, phone or post. An unverified profile won't rank well.
2. Write Your Description in English, and Mention Portuguese
Most Irish customers search in English, so write your main description in English: what you offer, for whom and where. Then say clearly that you also speak Portuguese, for example: "We speak English and Portuguese (Português do Brasil e de Portugal)". This helps you win both audiences: Irish customers understand you, and Portuguese speakers feel at home.
Google also lets you add attributes to your profile, such as accessibility or payment options. Fill in everything that applies.
3. Add Real Photos, Often
Photos are one of the easiest ways to stand out. Add pictures of your premises (inside and outside, so people can find you), your team, your products and your work. A café should show its food and coffee; a renovation company should show finished jobs. Add new photos every month.
4. Get Reviews From Irish and Portuguese-Speaking Customers
Reviews are the strongest trust signal for new customers. Ask every happy customer, and make it easy with your review link or a QR code at the counter. Reviews in Portuguese are welcome and help the community find you; reviews in English help Irish customers trust you. Reply to every review in the language it was written in, politely and quickly. Never buy reviews or reward customers for them.
5. Make Your Details Consistent Everywhere
Use exactly the same name, address and phone number on your Google profile, website, Facebook, Instagram and directories. Inconsistent details confuse Google and reduce your visibility.
6. Give Your Website a Clear English Page
If your website is only in Portuguese, Irish customers and Google may not understand what you do. Have at least one clear page in English that mentions your service and your area (for example "Brazilian bakery in Dublin 7"), and link it to your Google profile. A Portuguese version can sit alongside it for the community.
7. Stay Active
Use Google Posts to share offers, new menu items, events and news every week or two. Answer questions in the Q&A section. Active profiles look more trustworthy to customers, and to Google.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Listing a home address you don't want public, instead of setting a service area.
- Using a foreign phone number that Irish customers won't call.
- Creating duplicate profiles for the same business.
- Writing everything only in Portuguese and losing Irish customers.
